ADT helps secure historic Magna Carta for 800th anniversary celebrations

13 August 2013

An expert from ADT Fire & Security, the UK’s leading provider of electronic fire and security solutions, was called in to enhance security at St Alban’s Cathedral as it celebrates the 800th anniversary of the city’s role in the story of Magna Carta. The Cathedral will be temporarily displaying the historical document, insured for over £30 million, that dates back to 1215; giving the public a unique opportunity to see the original Magna Carta on loan from Lincoln Cathedral.

Displaying such an old, historically vital and priceless piece of British history presents a security challenge that Cathedral staff are taking very seriously. To ensure the security of the document ADT has devised and installed an additional security system within a secure vault built by a specialist company.

Not only does the new temporary security system provide peace of mind in protecting the unique exhibit, it’s also easy to use for wardens familiar with the existing ADT systems at the Cathedral. Thanks to ADT’s experience of working in the Cathedral, the company was able to design and install the extra security equipment that was aesthetically in keeping with the exhibit and Cathedral without being noticeable and intrusive to visitors. Finally, ADT designed the system for this temporary exhibition so that it could be removed quickly and easily when the Magna Carta returns home to Lincoln.

“It is thanks to ADT’s security expertise coupled with its deep experience and understanding of securing heritage sites, and specifically St Albans Cathedral, that the Magna Carta can be enjoyed by the public without any risk or compromise to the safety of one of Britain’s most significant historical artefacts,” said Guy Madley, Business and Projects Officer at St Albans Cathedral. “We are very grateful for ADT agreeing to be one of our major sponsors and making this remarkable opportunity possible.”

“ADT was delighted to be able to play a part in this historic event” said David Myers, Regional Managing Director, ADT Fire & Security. “Our background in securing and managing historic sites gave us the ideal experience to take on this challenge, and with only one month to implement the project, we drew on our extensive skills to ensure the robust security solution was ready on time.”
