Top construction site security tips

If you’re in the construction industry, you’ll know the conflicting feeling of leaving your equipment on-site after a long day. Moving everything on and off-site is costly and time-consuming but storing it securely with no finished secure structures is near impossible.

It won’t surprise you that construction site theft costs the UK £800 million a year*, with a vast majority being metal thieves.

But there are some measures you can take to secure equipment on-site. Here’s our top tips for construction site security:

Light it up

There’s nothing more off-putting to thieves than being caught in the act. If your site is lit up like a stadium, it means CCTV is clearer and local residents can see intruders, so they’re far more likely to be caught.

Have one entrance

If there’s only one way in and out, it’s far easier to manage your building site security. Place your entry/exit in the most public corner of the construction site and up the security on the gates. For example: security alarms, chain locks and camera equipment.

Plan deliveries

Always make sure you plan deliveries to avoid them being dropped off before you arrive at, or after you leave, your site. So there’s no time for thieves to pick up the materials before you manage to secure them.

Secure your materials

Make sure you have insurance, especially for expensive equipment that might go missing. You may also want to invest in some UV pens to mark materials, then if another site has them delivered, they’ll be able to prove they’re stolen goods.

Consider going Smart

Smart technology helps you keep an eye on your site when you’re not there. At the touch of a button you can access cameras and set up scenarios to alert you when an intruder is detected. That way you can contact the authorities and catch the intruder in the act.

So, there you have it. There are plenty of ways to make sure your construction site is safe and restore that all important peace of mind to you and your team. Get in touch with one of our friendly advisors today to talk about how we can help protect your site.
