Your guide to garage door security

Garages are often where we keep some of our most valuable assets - from cars, to lawn mowers, to long forgotten treasures. Not only that, but they’re a great place for burglars to find tools, ladders or even an internal door to rob your property.

But there are instant deterrents you can add to your home to put burglars off and ways to keep your door safer so if the worst were to happen, you’d be protected.

Add motion sensor lights

Protect your garage door before someone even tries to break into it with outdoor lighting. Motion sensor lights mean that the second someone is on your property you’ll know about it. And if you have ADT Smart Home you’ll even get a notification – whether you’re in or not.

Frost your windows

Another way you can secure from the outside in is to make sure any windows don’t reveal what’s inside. You may want to board them up, or if you like the light use a spray to frost them. That way nosy burglars won’t know if there’s anything worth stealing and most likely won’t take the risk to find out.

Secure your doors

If burglars are scoping out your property, they’ll probably look for entrance points. Most garages have a few entry points beyond the main garage door - this might be an outer door, or even a door that leads into the house. Wherever it is, make sure you keep it secure. This means adding extra locks and bolts, and making sure it’s a sturdy door and frame that isn’t easily broken.

Do your research

Speaking of doors, we haven’t covered the most important door when it comes to a garage. The main metal exterior door. It may seem cut and dry, but you can make all the difference security wise by picking the right kind of door.

Roller and sectional doors are much harder to break into, simply due to their construction, than the average over up-and-over doors. You may also be tempted to get an electric door, if you do be sure to keep your remote safe. Leaving it in the car parked on the drive or on display in your home could be seen as an invitation. It may also be worth adding a bolt or additional lock to the inside for some extra internal garage door security.

Buy a door defender

That’s right, you can buy a garage door lock cost effectively online. Most are surface mounted T bars that sit at the base of the door and lock into place. That way if someone tries to wrench your door open from the bottom handle, they’ll be met with a surprising amount of counter force.
