Covid-19 means we’re all going to be spending a lot more time at home over the next few months. These simple tips will help you look after yourself and others in these uncertain times.
1. Stay in touch with the people who matter
Regular contact with friends and family is crucial. Seeing them is particularly important so use apps like FaceTime or Skype for one-to-one calls.
For larger groups try free platforms like Zoom or Houseparty. Make it an event: create your own virtual pub or book group. And be inclusive – try inviting at least one other person that not everybody knows.
2. Make sure you’re set up to work from home
If you’re going to be working from home it’s vital to create a space that works for you. A chair that supports your back is essential and if you’re working on a laptop raise it on a stand or pile of books so that the top of the screen is the same height as your eyebrows and use a separate keyboard and mouse if you can to avoid joint pain.
3. Set a routine and stick to it
Structure helps us adapt to unfamiliar and potentially stressful times. So whether you’re working or not, introduce a routine built around meals, exercise, time with the family and so on.
A 30-minute morning workout will boost endorphins, helping you feel positive all day. If you can, spend time outside too in the garden or on a balcony.
4. Stay security focused
Unfortunately, there have already been cases of scammers using Covid-19 as a way to trick people online, over the phone and even door-to-door. Report anyone who claims to be able to secure Coronavirus tests at a private clinic but then asks for bank details to secure the booking. Also be aware that burglars have been gaining access to homes by posing as NHS staff offering free home virus tests.
Keep on top of home security 24/7. Criminals know the authorities are stretched so continue to set alarms downstairs when you’re asleep and don’t leave doors and windows unlocked during the day.
5. Take the positives
These are unprecedented times. But staying positive is vital and there’s no reason why good things can’t come from a bad situation.
Plant herbs, veg or flowers in the garden. Paint the bedroom a different colour. Start learning a language. Finish that jumper you started knitting last year. But most of all, look after yourself, look after your family and look after your neighbours.
