There were 54,758 physical assaults against NHS staff from 2008 to 2009 according to the NHS SMS – National Violence against NHS Staff Statistics.  The consequences of violence on staff and professionals working in the NHS are difficult to quantify, however the National Audit Office (NAO) has estimated the direct financial cost to NHS Trusts to be at least £69m per annum.
