How to get kids thinking about home security

The long, sunny, summer holidays are over, meaning one thing: the kids are back at school. Your kids may have just got their very own house key or be well-versed in staying home alone before and after school, either way it’s worth reminding them about basic home security tips to help keep them safe.

Here are our tips to get kids thinking about keeping the family home secure, complete with eye roll and audible sigh:

Stress stranger danger

It’s definitely one of the time-honoured classics among parents, and has no doubt been drilled into them since they were small, but it’s always good to reiterate.

Remind your kids to never answer the door to a person they don’t know - even if they’re in a uniform. Burglars who’ve been watching your property could pose as workmen or delivery men to get the lay of the land on your home, guaranteeing a quick robbery when they return.

Hype up locking up

Even if your kids are in, burglars will still try their luck. In fact, 28% of burglaries are conducted while someone is in the house*.

When they get home, children should always lock the door behind them. Plus keep an eye on downstairs windows, especially those that are big enough to climb through.

Set alarm codes together

There’s nothing more annoying than a ringing alarm, especially teamed with a panicked call from your child because they can’t remember the code.

When you choose the alarm code make sure it’s one everyone can remember. Avoid writing it down on the box or close to it, making it really easy for intruders to shut it off.

Be key careful

From forgotten homework, to P.E. kits, we can all agree kids are forgetful. But, however tempting it may be to hide a key close to home, never do it.

You may think you’ve found the perfect hiding place, in a plant pot or under an ornament, but burglars are well versed in rooting them out. And it will void your insurance if there’s no sign of forced entry. If you do want to leave a key for your forgetful child, leave it with a friend or neighbour nearby.

Get smart

If you’re still on edge about your children being home alone, it may be time to think about going smart.

Smart tech lets you check on your children using an app. You can remotely access security cameras, set and silence the alarm remotely and even get a notification when they get home from school. Easy peasy! Check out our ADT Smart Home package to find out about more child-friendly features.
